Bank holiday activities to keep the whole family entertained

Want some crafty and creative bank holiday activities to keep the whole family happy? We’ve got you covered this long weekend, come rain or shine.

Take a wander with your lunch

Keep it classic with a family picnic and bring your lunch outdoors.

Take a long walk across the beach or through the forest before you open your picnic basket. It will help you build up an appetite – and it gets kids moving before they sit down for a snack.

Pack healthy treats to prevent everyone feeling sluggish on the way home. Why not swap chocolate for fruit or crisps for veggie sticks?

Have fun with fruit

Seasonal produce like strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants will be tasty and fresh in May. And by eating in-season food, you will be helping the planet.

Crush a handful of berries in an ice tray and pop them in the freezer. They are perfect for:

  • Tasty, frozen treats
  • Blending with milk for a quick milkshake
  • Fruity ice cubes that bring a splash of colour to water.

Strawberries are also the star of the show in our homemade strawberry and coconut ice-cream recipe.

Brilliant bug bingo

From snails and slugs to butterflies and bees, make a bug bingo card to get little ones searching for insects in the garden.

It will help to teach children to respect nature – and it’s a great way for them to get active.

And the best bit? It’s an activity they can try no matter the weather. See what you can spot in the sunshine or the rain.

Recycle and reuse

Your recycling pile is full of things that can be reused for crafts and games:

  • Decorate toilet tubes as different animals and use them as fun bowling skittles
  • Turn cereal boxes into dolls houses with windows and doors
  • Rip up old magazines and leaflets to use for mosaics and collages.

Old packets and bottles also make great plant pots and seed trays. It’s a quick and easy way to discover the health benefits of gardening

What will you grow first?
