Healthy rainy-day activities to keep you active and energised

Home Icon

Rainy days often tempt us to stay curled up on the sofa with a blanket, a hot drink, and perhaps a favourite film or book. While there’s nothing wrong with a bit of relaxation, it’s also important to keep our bodies and minds active, even when the weather keeps us indoors. Embracing healthy activities on rainy days can boost your mood, keep you energised, and ensure you stay on track with your wellness goals.

Rainy-day exercise activities

1. Move your body

There are lots of online resources you can use. Try a yoga flow, pilates session, or an exercise video. You can find lots of free classes for all abilities on YouTube. If you don’t have weights, grab some household items like water bottles or books and get creative.

Pro tip: Set a timer and focus on bodyweight exercises such as squats, push-ups, and planks to build strength and endurance.

2. Dance it out

Who says exercise has to be serious? Put on your favourite playlist, clear a bit of space in your living room, and dance like nobody’s watching. Dancing not only gets your heart rate up but is also a fantastic way to release stress and have fun.

Pro tip: Invite friends or family to join you for a mini dance party – the more, the merrier!

3. Play active indoor games

If you have kids (or even if you don’t!), Active indoor games are a great way to burn off some energy. Classics like hide-and-seek, balloon volleyball, or even a mini obstacle course can keep everyone moving and laughing.

Pro tip: Make it a competition with small prizes to add a bit of excitement.

4. Try a mindfulness practice

Rainy days are a great opportunity to focus on your wellbeing. Spend some time practising mindfulness, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises. These practices can help reduce stress, improve focus, and elevate your mood.

Pro tip: Apps like headspace or calm offer guided meditations for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.

5. Learn something new

Rainy days are ideal for engaging your mind. Take an online course, read a book on a topic you’ve always wanted to explore, or practise a new skill, such as painting, knitting, or playing an instrument. Learning something new is a great way to stay mentally active and can provide a sense of achievement.

Pro tip: Set small, achievable goals to keep yourself motivated and avoid frustration.

6. Whip up a healthy feast

Rainy days are perfect for spending time in the kitchen. Why not experiment with a new healthy recipe? Try making a hearty vegetable soup, a colourful buddha bowl, or some homemade granola bars. Cooking can be therapeutic, and preparing your own meals ensures you know exactly what’s going into your food.

Pro tip: Involve the family or housemates to turn it into a fun group activity.
