Low-impact exercise ideas

Home Icon

You don’t have to join the gym or go straight into the hard-hitting workouts. You may find it better to start with low-impact forms of exercise. This can help you find a new workout routine that works for you.

Make sure to talk to your GP before drastically changing your level of exercise.

Below, we have created a list of ideas suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and you can do many of them with friends for extra fun.

  1. Walking – Walking is an accessible, free form of exercise that improves heart health and you can do it anywhere.. Plus, it gets you out and about.  Walking in nature is great for your wellbeing, especially with friends.
  2. Swimming – Getting in the pool can provide a full-body workout, while also being particularly easy on the joints. Floating in water reduces stress on the body, so it is ideal for people with joint pain or injuries. And you can go as fast or slow as you like.
  3. Cycling – Cycling is much less taxing on the joints than activities which involve running or jumping.  It’s great for cardiovascular fitness and strengthens the legs, without any impact on the knees and hips.  Exercise bikes can offer a safe indoor alternative.
  4. Dancing – Exercise doesn’t have to be sporty, and dancing can be a great way to have fun while getting more active — whether you join a dance class or have a kitchen disco with your family.
  5. Water aerobics – Being in a swimming pool is also great for supporting your weight during an aerobics session. Most swimming pools run these, and they can be a great way to get social too.
  6. Yoga, pilates, tai chi – These forms of exercise are focused on slow movements or stretching, and can enhance your flexibility, strength and balance — while also providing relaxation and mental clarity.
  7. Weight training, bodyweight or chair exercises – Strength training becomes especially important from middle age, and you can do it at the gym or at home using equipment or your own bodyweight. If your mobility is limited, you can perform exercises while sitting on a chair.

Why not try a few of these ideas and see what you enjoy? The most important thing is to find something you can stick with and do regularly.
