Cooking red meat on the grill is far healthier than frying it in a pan – but there are even healthier ways to enjoy barbecued meat.

Here are out top alternatives to try:

  • Prawns

Enjoy them in a bun with your choice of sauce – or serve them up with some wholegrain pasta, salad or brown rice.

Smoky sweet potato

A healthier way to enjoy chips is to swap the humble potato for its sweeter cousin.

Sweet potatoes can be enjoyed as skin-on fries and chunky wedges – or make some speedy mash by wrapping a whole potato in foil and popping it on the grill.

Bread can also be finished on the barbecue. Add a thin layer of low-fat spread to wholegrain garlic bread, burger buns or flatbread, then grill each side for a couple of minutes.

Versatile vegetables

There are so many ways you can enjoy a barbecue if you are vegan or vegetarian (or just looking for healthy BBQ ideas).

Almost any vegetable can be grilled, including aubergines, courgettes, peppers and carrots. Just sprinkle with some seasoning and wrap in foil.

And the most versatile veggie of all? The cauliflower! Cut one into steak-sized slices and season with curry powder, chilli powder or steak seasoning.
