Smoking myths busted

You might have heard some of these

We’re all aware that smoking is harmful, yet some myths can lead people to continue this unhealthy habit.
Don’t fall into this trap.

“I’ve smoked all my life, quitting now won’t help”

It’s never too late to quit, regardless of your age. You will still experience health improvements when you stop. The health risks fall quickly after quitting, so you are likely to have a longer and healthier life.

“Low-tar cigarettes are safer”

Choosing low-tar cigarettes doesn’t reduce the risks. In fact, those who smoke them can inhale more deeply. Remember, every cigarette contains around 4,000 harmful chemicals — affecting vital organs and affecting the health of those around you.

“Smoking helps me stay calm and de-stress”

Smoking is more likely to make you anxious, because nicotine is a stimulant. Smokers constantly need nicotine, so stress relief is just temporary. Non-smokers also generally have lower stress levels.

“Smoking won’t harm me; I know long-time smokers who are fine”

Smoking is one of the leading causes of death and illness in the UK. Approximately 78,000 people die from smoking-related causes every year, while many more have serious health problems from the habit. Is the risk worth it?

“I don’t smoke often so it’s not as harmful.”

Even smoking just onetofour cigarettes a day increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer compared to non-smokers. If that’s all you’re smoking, you can probably stop easier than a heavier smoker. Your health is worth it.
